This space is for talking about any kind of horror movie. It might be a review or just me discussing it. Spoiler warning!

My Top Horror Movies
The Substance The Fly Q Frankie Freako
The Substance (2024)

I thought this movie was great. It looked really cool, like the colors and everything. I thought the plot was interesting as well, and the ending was just absolutley perfect. For a movie to really stand out to me, I've gotta be obsessed with the ending. Another big thing for me is practical effects, and this movie excelled at that as well. All around just a great watch, had me on the edge of me seat, and it was all wrapped up with a perfect ending.

The Fly (1986)

I only watched this movie this year and I was totally blown away. I love watching his transformation, and the wacky tech featured in the movie is so fun. I noticed this is the second body horror movie on the list, but I can't help but loving creatures and practical effects. I won't write any more because it has probably all been said before. A horror must-watch.

Q (1982)

This one is a more recent watch, but this movie entertained me so much I just had to put it on here. This is a movie about a giant dragon basically who is nested up in New York City. It is supposed to be Quetzalcoatl, but she is mostly referred to as the flying serpent. There's ritualistic murders/suicides and stuff, and Q is out for blood herself. She snatches people up and this random criminal who sucks at being a criminal gets in the middle of it after finding her nest.

The thing about this movie is it kinda reminds me of Ray Harryhausen's classical antiquity films I have seen with the stop motion animation creatures interacting with people. Loved the big claw as well. The movie overall is pretty cheesy, but I just really thought it was a good watch.

Frankie Freako (2024)

Oh my god. A masterpiece. This is like if someone decided to make the Garbage Pail Kids movie but good. I love the puppets and how creative this movie is. It is clear that a lot of thought went into this and the practical stuff looks cool. It is also surprisingly (mostly) kid-friendly. They drink shit like Fart Cola. I don't know if you know this one, but please let me convince you with this review.

This movie is about a man who is super boring. He works a boring job and his boss pushes him to spice things up and dangles a promotion in his face to light a fire under his ass. His boss also asks him to come in on Saturday for some "creative accounting" (fraud) and he agrees, not really grasping what is going on. At the same time, he has this super cool wife who is gonna go on a trip soon for work and she totally loves him and doesn't mind him being kinda boring, but she also encourages him to go outside his comfort zone. All this time, our main character has been seeing these advertisments on television for a certain "Frankie Freako" who is a little demon guy with a cool outfit and purple hair. The ad says to call Frankie to get freaky, and after his wife leaves, he breaks, and calls the number.

I don't want to go into too many spoilers, but if you are STILL not convinced, I will give you more details. Frankie gets summoned and they party hard, but out main guy doesn't remember it. He wakes up and is totally confused and angry about his trashed house. There are two other friends of Frankie's there with him. A cowgirl Freako and a blue little tech guy Freako (that is what they are called, BTW). Lots of fighting ensues, but eventually they unite against a common enemy.

Movie Reviews
Twenty Twenty-Five
Black Christmas
The Substance

I have not seen a whole lot of Christmas-themed horror movies in my time. As a child, I was obsessed with Jack Skellington and the like, so it is not like I am opposed.

I thought this was super good. I am going to assume that it popularized the "the caller is in the house!!!!" ending. That dude was totally crazy! His laughs and voice were pretty creepy! I enjoyed the kills that it depicted, or at least I thought they were fun. One thing that stood out to me a lot was the ending. I really liked the zoom out where it shows how no one has found the girl in the attic by the end. It is haunting. As a person who occasionally watches true crime videos on YouTube (literally only EXPLORE WITH US/EWU lol), it felt like something I would hear straight out of one of those.

I don't know if this movie was Christmas-y enough for me though. I wish the guy had a holiday-related reason to commit his crimes or something. I like to nitpick though! So really that means if this is the biggest issue for me, the movie was damn good!

Joe's Apartment
Joe's Apartment

I don't know if this is the right space to put this movie, but I don't care. I can see this being a horror movie to many if they gave it a shot. Joe's Apartment is about a man who takes an old woman's rent-controlled apartment by pretending to be her grandson after she dies in front of him. The apartment is disgusting, chock-full of singing cockroaches, and it is the very last one standing after the rest of the ones around it have been demolished. The roaches follow Joe and won't leave him alone. They start to ruin his entire life. He can't get a job, he can't get a girlfriend. At the same time, a sentator's daughter is trying to turn the barren area around the apartment into a beautiful garden for the community, while he is trying to make it into a huge private prison.

HIM
HIM

This movie had really mixed reviews, with many saying it absolutely sucks, and others saying that you have to be smart to understand it or like it. Yeah, no. Both of those are bullshit. It is a good movie, not perfect, but I think it has cult classic potential. I get why people don't like it, but I was the target audience for this movie. I love horror and I fucking love football. This movie was able to keep my attention very well. I will admit that the day 3-4 lost me a bit. I feel as if they cut down some stuff and I am not sure why. I think a director's cut is needed for this movie.

My favorite scene is probably the ending. Normally the endings of horror movies are the thing I like the least about them, but this was solid. He ends up killing the people that I wanted him to, and he did it shirtless and covered in blood. Wow. Beautiful.

It has some good allegories for fans or football culture as well. There was a character willing to get hurt over and over just for his teammate. People are thinking that this is supposed to represent the fans, who are loyal despite the hurt. I also think the main lady was supposed to be Taylor Swift, but I could be wrong.

Human Centipede 3
Human Centipede 3

In true Human Centipede fashion, this movie loves its shock value. Our main character, Bill Boss, is a rapist and is about every type of bigoted. He seems to think all people are below him. The movie is very self-aware. His freak accountant won't stop suggesting the idea of turning the prisoners into the human centipede. The accountant invites the literal director of the movies, Tom Six, in to explain how "medically accurate" it is. Boss is convinced after hearing that and all of this staff on board.

There is a lot of vulgar and offensive shit. I would encourage absolutely no one to do a drinking game with how many times "death-rape" is said. You will black out and possibly die. A guy gets a hole cut in his kidney by a prisoner who then went on the fuck it. Thankfully, that was just a dream sequence.

Weapons
The Substance

So far, this has to be the best horror movie of the year. I saw people comparing it to a dark fairytale and I would agree. It was really interesting to watch too with the multiple perspectives. I love some gay rep of course too, but they died like ASAP once you it was revealed. It kinda made me sad. That lady was evil as fuck. I like how you can just know it is her who is the bad guy the whole time. I really liked the plot and the magic stuff they had in the movie. I'm so sick and tired of like bible demons and shit. I like how they did not go into detail about how it worked either. I saw someone complain about that and thought they were stupid for wanting that. The way the went about it is exactly how it should go.
